Meet the Members Monday

Hi!  I’m Cristy Hawkley, married to Tyson Hawkley (first year med student with the Air Force - non prior).  We have one little guy on the way, due in November.  We’re super excited to be parents and to be out here. Actually, I was born here in Silver Spring and grew up in Southern Maryland by the Chesapeake Bay.  Before I met my husband, I spent a year and a half in Brazil serving the people there and learning of their culture and language, which I love. After, I met my husband while we were both out at school in Utah. We’ve been married for almost a year now.  I graduated from Brigham Young University in Mathematics Education and taught AP statistics and Algebra II at a high school in Utah the year before Tyson and I married and the year after I graduated.  During this first year of marriage I started and got halfway through the program to receive my masters in statistics, also at BYU.  Moving here has put a slight (or maybe permanent halt) in that plan, but moving here is like moving home so it’s a fair trade off.  Plus, I’m happy to support Tyson in his medical career.  So far we’ve enjoyed our experience with the military.  It’s a lifestyle my husband knows growing up with an air force dad, but I’m just getting introduced to.  We’re excited for this next year!  I like being outdoors, camping, hiking, playing sports (even if I’m terrible), well playing any game really.

Meet the Members Monday

Hi All! My name is Katy Good and I am the wife of a current USU student in the Graduate School of Nursing. Unlike most of the rest of the SSC members, my husband David is pursuing his Masters Degree and a career as a Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA). His program started this May and he will graduate in December of 2014. The first year is spent here in Bethesda for the didactic portion. We will PCS to Alaska next May, where he will do the majority of his clinicals.

We met in college in the southwest and married while in nursing school. This is also when he commissioned with the United States Public Health Service (USPHS). That was 7 years ago! The day after graduation in 2006, we PCSd to Boston where we both began our careers as RNs. Our son Griffin (5) was born there. Two years later, we PCSd to Flagstaff, AZ where we both worked for Indian Health Services near the Navajo reservation. Our Daughter, Rozlyn (2) was born there. In 2011, I took on a nonclinical role at the local hospital as a program coordinator while he began diligently pursuing Anesthesia school. For USPHS, the process is somewhat different and he had to secure sponsorship from a specific federal healthcare agency. This was daunting and stressful but he eventually made it happen and is currently being sponsored by an IHS site in New Mexico where we will move after he graduates.

Currently, my employer is allowing me to work remotely from home and I feel very lucky to continue with my career while still managing to support David in his endeavor and also have flexibility with my kids. Additionally, we are expecting another boy over Winter break (convenient, right?). Of course, life is hectic, but I wouldn't have it any other way!

To those who have been here awhile, thank you for your help and hospitality. To those who recently arrived, welcome! I look forward to meeting more of you. Just as soon as I can make it to a meeting....

Meet the Members Monday

Hello! My name is Dana Wadzinski, my husband Will is a fourth year Army student. I have an older son, Alex age 12, who just started 7th grade and Will and I have a 1 year old daughter Grace (born June 2011). We are expecting a new addition to the family in February! I moved to Maryland about 5 years ago from Florida, but now consider this area home. Will and I met here while he was home on leave from deployment in Iraq and came to the area to interview at USUHS.  We have been inseparable since he moved to the area to start school and married fall of his second year. I work part-time as a nurse in the ICU at a hospital in the area and love my job. Will is an old pro at the whole military thing but I am getting really nervous about what is in store for us after graduation! The idea of leaving my comfort zone and possibly moving to a new area with a middle schooler and two small children seems overwhelming!
